My
clients are exceptional people
My clients are exceptional people. They are
growing, successful and well. They want to grow more, be more
successful and better. We are a team. My only objective is to
assist my clients in reaching theirs.
I expect
your best
If you are hiring me, you are probably
ready to do and be your best. If you aren’t doing your best, I
will ask you to. If you can’t do that at the moment, we will
work together to find out why, and to get you back on track.
I make
direct requests
From time to time, I’ll make a direct
request, like “Will you accomplish X by the end of the
month?” You may accept the request, counter-offer (e.g. say
when you can do it by) or decline (rare). This is where you
stretch, and where the breakthroughs occur.
I talk
straight
If I am sure of the situation, and you’re
open to it, I’ll make specific suggestions on how to handle a
problem or “go for” an opportunity. If I am not sure, I’ll say
so. Honesty is one of my values—I talk straight and expect the
same from you. Regardless, use the best of what I say and
combine it with your judgments to make decisions that are right
for you.
I don’t
let much slip by
When I hear a funny tone in your voice,
sense that something isn’t right or pick-up inconsistencies
in our discussion, I’ll ask you about it. Often, it is these
moments that offer the greatest opportunity to resolve something
important. However, I don’t confront or push—I’ll merely invite
you to look at something. If it feels like I’m pushing, tell me.
I give
homework
Assignments are practical, tailored to your
development needs, and can be easily integrated into normal
professional and personal activities. If it is too much, say so.
If you want more, just ask.
You are
expected to use me, not depend on me
As
your coach, I am a resource for you to use to your best
advantage. I am committed to you and your success. Use me as a
resource, a partner, a teammate, a friend—I am all of these.
Avoid, however, developing a dependency on coaching in general,
or me in particular. My clients are exceptional people—they
see the value in using a coach for leverage, not as a crutch.
